Squirrel Jays
Cake on the Mountain was born around 2005, referring to a Squirrel Jays tradition of sharing a
slice of cake at the peak of Corona Heights Park, in San Francisco, California. In the works for
nearly two decades, these fourteen songs serve as a dynamic family portrait, capturing a father
and his two daughters across different stages of their lives. As JJ and LJ left the nest and moved
across oceans for university, recording equipment came with. Rented bedrooms acted as
temporary studios. Scattered across the globe, but united in joy.
The Squirrel Jays have captured a unique sound that transcends space and me, evidenced by
sheets and sheets of hand-written lyrics, crossed out, layered, and added-to in a range of pen
colors over the years, traveling around the world in a suitcase. Vocals the sisters recorded when
they were 10 and 12, remixed and given new life at 19 and 21. Seasons, songs, and even voices
change, but love persists.
With a little help from our friends, this collection of homegrown recordings came together. A
sort of psychedelic folk sprinkle of sounds, rhythms, and lyrics. Cake on the Mountain is a
journey, culminating with ‘Lines’—the last track on the album, and the last to be written.
We hope you enjoy this project as much as we enjoyed creating it.
With love,
Squirrel Jays
